1.5 Analyze and Select Design

Pugh Matrix

Our criteria were based on the trigger points that we chose from the PDS list of 29 items. These factors are the most important to us to be able to produce a product that enhances the lives of those struggling with issues in their lives. We wanted to make sure that ergonomics was the first priority for our device, as the comfort of our potential customers is our number one priority. As such, it was weighted heavily - at the same weight as 3-d printing capability. Quality/Reliability and Performance were very important as well, as our product needed to consistently provide a significant pain relief and quality of life upgrade for our customers.

Our chosen design to manufacture was design 3, the attachment to an existing clothes hook. The other two designs that lost were intended to be a full replacement to a clothing hook, but our analysis from our Pugh Matrix stated that this would be the best option. Performance was the category that decided this comparison. Since the first two designs were simply more ergonomics replacements, they scored a zero for this category, while design 3 was able to score higher due to its multiple ways of handling the implement and ability to customize its length by modifying the original clothing hook.
