Part Analysis

Most of the mouse’s components are design-specific, the only industry standard parts were the screws, springs, and mouse feet. We are also guessing that the receiver is not unique, since it most likely got bundled with keyboards, other mice, etc. from the same company.

The electronic components were most likely designed using industry standard components, by which we are referring to the ICs, switches, capacitors and resistors that make up the circuit boards.

Part Specific Analysis

Scroll wheel

The material used in this particular part is rubber. We can tell this by the texture of the part. This particular material is used in the scroll wheel because of its frictional property. It enables the user to scroll through the pages without having to worry about their fingers slipping, making it more efficient than plastic.

Main circuit

The main circuit of the mouse is most likely made of silicon, solder, copper, etc., the basic building components of any circuit. There is a green solder sheet on top of the circuit as visible from the image. We know that solder is used in a circuit due to its melting point because it is a good conductor. The solder sheet prevents drips etc. from damaging the board, while also preventing excess solder from staying on the holes.

Main body

The main body of the mouse is made out of plastic and has a complex structure. The texture and its flexibility were what led us to believe that it’s made of plastic. One can see that it's lustrous, and when one tries to bend it, it is easy to bend without breaking or change its shape.

Part manufacturing Principles

Scroll Wheel

Plastic/metal can be manufactured in different ways to increase friction, by changing their texture, but doing this can increase the cost of manufacturing. We believe that the manufacturing process used to make this scroll wheel was extruding/molding since they are commonly used to manufacture rubber products and are cheaper compared to other alternatives. The mouse seems to have been made with the mindset to keep costs as low as possible so they likely used the cheapest manufacturing process available.

Main Circuit

The process used to manufacture it is the IC manufacturing process. We know this because this is the manufacturing process used for almost all 21st-century circuits, so we assumed they would use the most common method.

Main Body

Just by looking at it, we could tell that it was made using injection molding, Since we know they wanted manufacturing costs as low as possible and it is made of plastic. Injection molding is one of the cheapest methods for the mass production of plastic parts.
